Windows 10 – One Massive Success

In what

might possibly be the most unsurprising software news ever, Microsoft’s new Windows 10 Operating System has been installed 53 million times and  managed to capture almost 5% of the market in just under 3 weeks.

These figures have been reported by several tech related websites in the last 48 hours or so, including IGN, NeoWin, and Ubergizmo. Microsoft themselves however, have yet to comment on this seemingly good news. But then they haven’t commented on the number of installs since announcing that Windows 10 bypassed the 14,000,000 mark in its first 24 hours of release.

It’s possible Microsoft is waiting for a more significant milestone like 10% to begin jumping up and down, or maybe waiting to compile some official stats of their own. Or it could just be they’re in a huff because users are mostly using the new Edge browser to download Google Chrome. Whatever the reason, 5%, or 4.95% to reflect the figures accurately in such a short space of time is still a significant number.

And it also plays into Microsoft’s aim to achieve a significant enough market share that cannot be ignored by developers, in as short a time as possible. The huge number of people downloading and installing Windows 10 has been in no small part due to the fact that the upgrade is free for legitimate copies of Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Apart from some small teething issues, the upgrade to Windows 10 has been seen as a pain free, seamless and positive transition for most users. The biggest moan so far has been from the makers of Firefox regarding the aggressive ‘selling’ of the Edge browser.  Reviews of Windows 10 in the tech world have been overwhelmingly positive, so far, at least.

At its peak, Windows 10 was being downloaded a mammoth 1500 times a second last week. The number of reported installs have now slowed, but that doesn’t make the numbers any less impressive.
