Today Mohit Goel, Founder and CEO, Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd., a Noida based startup, sits in comfort and relief in his Sector 62 office, with 2 lakh ‘Freedom 251’ handsets ready. Storming into the smartphone world with the cheapest phone at Rs. 251, Goel heaves a huge sigh of relief that despite allegations from various quarters that such a phone won’t see the light of the day and an FIR lodged against the company in addition, the company has been able to keep its promise to the customers.
“We are ready with nearly 2 lakh ‘Freedom 251’ handsets. We will start delivery from June 30.” Goel said. On the completion of his first phase of delivery ( 2 lakh phones). Ringing bells will open registration again for those who wish to buy the handset. The company’s plans to sell off 25 lakh handsets before June 30, hit a roadblock when it’s payment gateway crashed before receiving over 7 crore registrations, within 3 days.
“We learnt from our mistakes and decided to go silent till we come out with the product. Now we have a 4-inch, dual SIM phone ready for delivery. I feel vindicated.” He added. Despite the loss of Rs. 140- 150 per unit, Goel is happy to have fulfilled the dream of connecting rural and poor Indians as part of the ‘Digital India’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
The 3G device incudes a 1.3 GHz quad core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage . In addition to it, an 8- MP primary camera with flash, a 3.2 – MP front camera for wellies and also an 1800 mAh battery is also included. It runs on Android 5.1 (Lollipop).
Coming in 2 colours, Black and White, the centrally aligned rear camera and branding is on the back panel whereas a speaker is situated alongside the branding.
An interesting fact is that the device displays the Indian tricolour when you switch on the device. All the basic Google apps are incorporated in the handset.
Manufactured in Haridwar, the plan is to sell 2 lakh devices every month.
The plan to launch a 32- inch HD LED TV christened “Freedom” is also due in July. It will be available for less than Rs. 10,000, making it India’s cheapest TV sets. Currently there are 1 lakh pieces in stock.
Freedom 251, launched in February in the presence of veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, maintained that the device has been developed with immense support from government. Doubts were raised over the device after some experts voiced that no phone could be manufactured for less than Rs. 2,000.
